THe biggest obstacle to landing remote jobs

It amazes me to no end how many people want to work remotely, or say they do, but haven’t actually tried to land a remote job…ever. 

There really is no substitute for action folks.  None at all. 

In most cases, they haven’t taken action because they have already convinced themselves it won’t work.

9 out of the 10 people I talk to about fulfilling their desire to work remote are blocking themselves from working remotely. It pains me that this is happening because what that means is there are THOUSANDS of remote jobs out there that you aren’t going to get because you won’t even try and you won’t try because you’ve made assumptions about what will or will not happen if you do.

I’ve been landing remote work for over 10 years. I’m not special. I mean, my momma told me I was special, but I bet yours did too.

The only real difference between me and you is I tried and kept trying.

Based on the conversations I’ve had with folks who slide in my DMs or post on my IG about working from remote, I have noticed a few patterns

people assume remote jobs are just for techies

For some reason, most people think that remote jobs are only for developers and tech people.  That could not be farther from the truth. In fact, there are more remote jobs out there for non-tech people than there are for tech people.

But let’s just say, for arguments sake, that only tech companies were hiring remote employees. Let’s say the only companies out there hiring a remote workforce are the Googles, the Apples and the Ubers of the world.  Guess what those tech folk are not doing at Google, Apple, and Uber? They are not doing do their own accounting, finance, recruiting, HR, or administrative work. So even tech companies need people like me and you to keep their virtual doors open.

people think remote jobs don’t pay well or have good benefits

Ok, I was guilty of this one myself. I had a friend tell me I should work for the company he was working for at the time b/c they had Project Managers that work remote all over the US. At the time, I loved my job and was making over six figures as a PM. I really wanted to be remote just because I wanted some freedom in my schedule to travel and focus on building my business(es).

I ignored his offer to refer me for about 6 months because I thought “there’s no way they’ll pay me what I’m currently making to work remotely”.  One day, after realizing I really needed to commit to being able to travel more if I wanted to start my business I finally decided to stop relying on my assumptions and just ask him what the salary range was.

BRUH! It was more than I was makinging at the time. In fact, by the time I received and negotiated my offer, they were paying me $20K more to sit at home and work than I was making driving to an office every day! 

But here’s the thing, I do believe there is a reasonable pay cut I would have taken in exchange for the freedom to work from anywhere.  It would have been worth it to me. Figure out what that reasonable pay cut is for you. What are you willing to give up for the freedom to spend more time with your family or spend more time living your life?

PS a lot of remote jobs have unlimited PTO!!!

people tell themselves they aren’t qualified

I read somewhere that many women do this, especially.

I read a study that said men will apply for a job even if they meet less than 50% of the qualifications and women will only apply if they meet 90% or more.  

We look at a job posting and we’re mostly qualified but we’re missing one or two key things in the job posting so we just don’t apply at all.

WHY?!? WHY DO WE DO THIS??

The way I see it, I’m putting my bid in either way. What do I have to lose aside from the 10 mins I spent on the application? Let them decide they don’t want me.  Because if I choose not to apply for the job, I’ve decided they dont want me. Who am I to make decisions for them?? 

Now I’m not saying just sling your resume to every job out there, but if you meet 70% of the job requirements, why not go for it? The ones where you don’t meet all or most of the qualifications are the ones you should make damn sure your resume and cover letter show why they should consider you even though you have gaps in your quals. 

I hired someone recently for a job he was missing qualifications for. The job posting said we were looking for someone with Master Data Management experience. MDM is a very industry specific term. Neither of the top 3 candidates had it, but they had a lot of other relevant experience that made me believe they would be great in the position. The guy I hired, who had ZERO MDM experience is currently ROCKING IT on his MDM projects.

It is absolutely impossible to get a job you don’t apply for.

All that said, I can only conclude that the single BIGGEST obstacle to most people landing remote work is themselves.

You are likely your biggest obstacle to landing remote work. The assumptions and myths you have chosen to believe without substantiation is stopping you from snagging a remote job because you won’t even start looking and applying.

    Intersting. But not surprised. Men, we tend to “shoot our shot” a lot in life like this, regardless of if it’s “realistic” or not.

    I fit more along where you suggested: 70%. I’ve never really jotted it down to keep a record, but i would say that if i met 60-70% of a job’s posted requirements, i’d send off an application. My bread and butter to make an impression have always been my interviewing and cover letter skills.

    This also applies to other things in life outside of job searching: not particularly a fear type of person, so i just go for it. Make up for what i lack in one area with something else.

    Thanks for the post! Actually got me off the fence with this one gig that, though i would say i’m 80% qualified, i’m feeling a little hesitant because that remaining 20% is kind of a big deal — in my head, at least.

    Here’s to figuring it out!

      I’ve definitely been there. I’ve sat on a job app before b/c I really REALLY wanted to job and I was scared I wouldn’t get it. Then I had to remind myself that I definitely won’t get it if I don’t hit “submit” so…and I didn’t get the job, but at least I’m not wondering if I would have gotten it, ya know.

      I’m betting there are PLENTY of remote jobs you qualify for…and based on your email address, you take care of children, chile THAT’S difficult, everything else is a breeze in comparison, lol! You got this.

I'm chatting with you from my home office today about positions that are not 100% remote.

They do exist and A LOT of people don't even bother looking at them because they are so focused on finding a fully remote job.

I want to encourage you to apply for these jobs even if they aren't fully remote.

Why?

Well, for one you need to get into the habit of applying for jobs and going through the hiring process. I believe in achievement motivation. Once you start applying for the jobs you "kinda" want, it will be that much easier to apply for the ones you really want.

Secondly, if you get the job, you will now have remote experience and that will make you more appealing to the companies that are hiring a 100% remote workforce.

But the biggest reason I want you to go for it is because partial remote is more remote than you are now!

So get out there and apply.

    • Where there are two or more women gathered together, there is bound to be drama, right?

WRONG!

During my girls trip to Turks and Caicos, several men made mention of the fact that we seemed to be so cool with each other and had no drama during our trip. They seemed shocked and impressed.

Admittedly, we took this as a compliment. We proudly touted that "WE don't do drama!" as if we're special.

I thought about this on my way home and felt I had to say out loud that I think this stereotype should DIE!

We are in the Era of The Sistafriend. Women are supporting one another, cheering one another on, taking trips together, starting businesses together, and just having a damn good time together.

Today, I want to challenge you all to expand your remote work opportunities to freelancing.

Freelancing is a great way to work remotely!

You would be surprised to know that there are MANY companies, both big and small that are willing to pay you for the expertise and skills you have.

During my first monthly "Lib Search For My Remote Job" session last night, I spoke to two women about freelancing.

One wanted to be a recruiter. This is a REALLY great field for freelancing but you have to build your network.

The other wanted to help non-profits with fundraising. There are not usually a ton of remote opportunities with non-profits so I suggested that she build out a suite of services from building strategic plans to executing those plans and approach some non-profits who are currently hiring for similar roles and offer to consult with them.

Freelancing is definitely a great way to broaden the range of opportunities for you to go remote

    • Ever give a woman a compliment and the first thing she does is explain why you shouldn't have?

How many times have you done this yourself?

It's such an interesting and automated response and it seems to be something women do almost exclusively.

I imagine if it were men, one man might say **turns on deep voice** "hey man, I like that beard look bro, its dope" and the man would never respond with "for real man? It's so dry and I need a line up!". No, he would say "thanks man, 'preciate that"

Why do we have so much trouble graciously receiving compliments?

Are we trying to portray modesty?

Do we think it makes us seem conceited?

Or do we think we don't deserve the compliment

This happened on two occasions over the weekend.

I told one woman that her lashes looked great and she immediately launched a smear campaign about how they were old and needed to be redone. I placed my hand on her shoulder to stop her and said "oooh girl, just say thank you" 🤣

Another woman I was chatting with had such beautiful skin and I told her so. She looked at me concerned like she thought I might be losing my eyesight and said "oh no, I'm so mad at my skin, I'm breaking out and..." I cut her off and said "I think your skin is beautiful, just say thank you" 🤣

I absolutely do this too. Most of us do. I don't know why we do it, but I would love for us to stop.

We do not owe modesty to the world. We do owe it to ourselves to be bold in our acceptance of our beauty, our strength, our power.

There is a big difference between being conceited and being confident and accepting compliments does not tip the scales towards conceit. It does, however, exhibit graciousness.

We don't get to decide whether or not we deserve the compliment. The person giving it to us already declared it. Its ours. They weren't asking our permission or asking us to sign off on it. They chose to compliment us because we were deserving. We should accept that. We deserve it.

Take the compliment, sis. Just say "thank you".

    • Crazy enough, our weekend trip to Memphis was the first "real"  trip Zian and I have taken together since Christmas when we went to Colombia 😯😯

She and I have made road trips back to my hometown, we went to Chicago to drop her at summer camp, and we went to Detroit to say goodbye to our Jadyn, but this is the first trip of the year where we got to kick it together.

Yesterday, I moderated a panel for @audacityfest discussing traveling with children alongside @tanaibenardturner, @themomtrotter, @thetravelingchild, and @@gabbok17. One of the things we talked about was how much quality bonding time we get when we travel with our kids.

I love stepping outside of our regular routine of being mom and daughter and just being people exploring a town, getting to know who my daughter is as a person, and letting her learn who I am as Libryia, not as "mom".

Although our time in Memphis was brief, I truly enjoyed sharing history with my kiddo at the National Civil Rights Museum, chatting and strolling down Main St., grooving to music at the #BringYourSoul block party,  two-stepping to the jams played by @bigsueshouse at brunch, and mural hunting for dope shots for da gram (thanks @ilovememphisblog for the murals list!)

It's true, she and I can bond at home. But there is something so special about discovering a new place and ourselves.

Memphis, thank you for having us! We can't wait to come back and explore more of what you have to offer!
