THe biggest obstacle to landing remote jobs

It amazes me to no end how many people want to work remotely, or say they do, but haven’t actually tried to land a remote job…ever. 

There really is no substitute for action folks.  None at all. 

In most cases, they haven’t taken action because they have already convinced themselves it won’t work.

9 out of the 10 people I talk to about fulfilling their desire to work remote are blocking themselves from working remotely. It pains me that this is happening because what that means is there are THOUSANDS of remote jobs out there that you aren’t going to get because you won’t even try and you won’t try because you’ve made assumptions about what will or will not happen if you do.

I’ve been landing remote work for over 10 years. I’m not special. I mean, my momma told me I was special, but I bet yours did too.

The only real difference between me and you is I tried and kept trying.

Based on the conversations I’ve had with folks who slide in my DMs or post on my IG about working from remote, I have noticed a few patterns

people assume remote jobs are just for techies

For some reason, most people think that remote jobs are only for developers and tech people.  That could not be farther from the truth. In fact, there are more remote jobs out there for non-tech people than there are for tech people.

But let’s just say, for arguments sake, that only tech companies were hiring remote employees. Let’s say the only companies out there hiring a remote workforce are the Googles, the Apples and the Ubers of the world.  Guess what those tech folk are not doing at Google, Apple, and Uber? They are not doing do their own accounting, finance, recruiting, HR, or administrative work. So even tech companies need people like me and you to keep their virtual doors open.

people think remote jobs don’t pay well or have good benefits

Ok, I was guilty of this one myself. I had a friend tell me I should work for the company he was working for at the time b/c they had Project Managers that work remote all over the US. At the time, I loved my job and was making over six figures as a PM. I really wanted to be remote just because I wanted some freedom in my schedule to travel and focus on building my business(es).

I ignored his offer to refer me for about 6 months because I thought “there’s no way they’ll pay me what I’m currently making to work remotely”.  One day, after realizing I really needed to commit to being able to travel more if I wanted to start my business I finally decided to stop relying on my assumptions and just ask him what the salary range was.

BRUH! It was more than I was makinging at the time. In fact, by the time I received and negotiated my offer, they were paying me $20K more to sit at home and work than I was making driving to an office every day! 

But here’s the thing, I do believe there is a reasonable pay cut I would have taken in exchange for the freedom to work from anywhere.  It would have been worth it to me. Figure out what that reasonable pay cut is for you. What are you willing to give up for the freedom to spend more time with your family or spend more time living your life?

PS a lot of remote jobs have unlimited PTO!!!

I read somewhere that many women do this, especially.

I read a study that said men will apply for a job even if they meet less than 50% of the qualifications and women will only apply if they meet 90% or more.  

We look at a job posting and we’re mostly qualified but we’re missing one or two key things in the job posting so we just don’t apply at all.

WHY?!? WHY DO WE DO THIS??

The way I see it, I’m putting my bid in either way. What do I have to lose aside from the 10 mins I spent on the application? Let them decide they don’t want me.  Because if I choose not to apply for the job, I’ve decided they dont want me. Who am I to make decisions for them?? 

Now I’m not saying just sling your resume to every job out there, but if you meet 70% of the job requirements, why not go for it? The ones where you don’t meet all or most of the qualifications are the ones you should make damn sure your resume and cover letter show why they should consider you even though you have gaps in your quals. 

I hired someone recently for a job he was missing qualifications for. The job posting said we were looking for someone with Master Data Management experience. MDM is a very industry specific term. Neither of the top 3 candidates had it, but they had a lot of other relevant experience that made me believe they would be great in the position. The guy I hired, who had ZERO MDM experience is currently ROCKING IT on his MDM projects.

It is absolutely impossible to get a job you don’t apply for.

All that said, I can only conclude that the single BIGGEST obstacle to most people landing remote work is themselves.

You are likely your biggest obstacle to landing remote work. The assumptions and myths you have chosen to believe without substantiation is stopping you from snagging a remote job because you won’t even start looking and applying.

    Intersting. But not surprised. Men, we tend to “shoot our shot” a lot in life like this, regardless of if it’s “realistic” or not.

    I fit more along where you suggested: 70%. I’ve never really jotted it down to keep a record, but i would say that if i met 60-70% of a job’s posted requirements, i’d send off an application. My bread and butter to make an impression have always been my interviewing and cover letter skills.

    This also applies to other things in life outside of job searching: not particularly a fear type of person, so i just go for it. Make up for what i lack in one area with something else.

    Thanks for the post! Actually got me off the fence with this one gig that, though i would say i’m 80% qualified, i’m feeling a little hesitant because that remaining 20% is kind of a big deal — in my head, at least.

      I’ve definitely been there. I’ve sat on a job app before b/c I really REALLY wanted to job and I was scared I wouldn’t get it. Then I had to remind myself that I definitely won’t get it if I don’t hit “submit” so…and I didn’t get the job, but at least I’m not wondering if I would have gotten it, ya know.

      I’m betting there are PLENTY of remote jobs you qualify for…and based on your email address, you take care of children, chile THAT’S difficult, everything else is a breeze in comparison, lol! You got this.

    • Sooooo much to unpack from this trip to Ghana!! Well, figuratively anyway.

Literally, we have a bit less to unpack because @KenyaAirways lost my daughter’s carry-on bag that they forced her to check on Monday. It’s now Friday night here and we are at the airport now heading back to the US and they still have not given us any indication on where her bag is. 😡😡😡 I’m upset about this because that bag contained the funky socks she inherited from her step brother who we lost two months ago. They were the only thing she asked to keep if his. I sincerely hope they find it.

Now back to the figurative unpacking. Ghana is so full - of people, of life, of history, of culture, of food, and of love.

I am full having been here (also figuratively and literally, LAWD I ATE ALL THE RICE)

This trip was far too short, we will definitely find ourselves back in this land soon.

    • Cape Town is one of the most beautiful places I have ever been!

In fact, I've been twice! The 2nd time, I stayed for 3.5 months AND I'm headed back 30 DAYS FROM TODAY with 12 families - total of 37 people ages 6 months to 61 years old!

A few quick things about traveling to Cape Town:

FLIGHTS ✈

Typical flights (from ATL) will run about $1,200+ but you can snag GREAT flight deals at $700 or lower.

WHAT YOU'LL LOVE 😍

There is just SO MUCH to do there for all ages and between the beaches, the mountains, and wine country, your eye sockets may just pop out. Its hands down one of the most beautiful cities I have ever seen.

My fave things about CPT

1. Weather
2. Table Mountain
3. Nightlife (Bree St. be 🔥)
4. Old Biscuit Mill
5. V&A Waterfont - there's ALWAYS something to do over there
6. Beaches - there are SO MANY
7. Wine

WHAT YOU'LL HATE 😡

Apartheid did a NUMBER on this place. While the city has SO MUCH beauty, it is very segregated (aside from downtown). In fact, many tourists think that Cape Town has a far larger white population than it does, only because the nice areas of town that tourists stay in are not populated by descendants of the original people.

Another thing you'll hate (this one is trivial) is that the beaches are GORGEOUS but the water is FREEZING! As a Florida girl, it's quite torturous to have a beautiful beach that I can't actually swim in...mind you, people do it. I can not! 🤣

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW 👩🏾‍🏫

If you are traveling to South Africa w/ children w/o their other parent, you WILL need to have a separate form completed with the other parent's signature and a copy of their ID. The ONLY way around this is:

1. Their name is not on the birth certificate

2. You have documented full custody

3. The other parent is deceased (you would need to bring a death certificate)

Ok, that's it. Back to planning my 3rd visit to The Mother City.

    • Goals are just talk without a plan. A plan is just words on paper without execution.

We need all three, and in that order!

One of the last conversations I had with my bonus son, Jadyn, was about this topic.

He had come home feeling optimistic and excited about his future. He told me proudly that he had come up with some goals for his life.

I told him, "that's great love and you need to go a couple steps further." I told him to break down his goals into a plan. I gave him the homework of identifying what his plan would be this month and this quarter to hit those goals. Then challenged him to show me how he would execute on that plan over the next week.

I suggested he write these things down and put them up on his wall so he could see his action plan and check things off.

I recently made my daughter go through the same exercise. She made a Goal Book. We meet weekly to go over our plans for the week and review how we executed last week's plan.

Having goals is hella cute.

Having a plan is really nice.

But we HAVE to execute.

I want to lay down a challenge for me, my daughter, and you this week to DO THE THINGS WE WROTE DOWN. 
This week, I'll be executing on my fitness goals, my business goals, and my lifestyle goals by:

1. Hitting the gym 4 times
2. Eating Whole 30 compliant meals
3. Hiring an admin
4. Building a content calendar
5. Planning my Ghana trip
6. Hanging my light fixture

APPLY FOR THE JOB!

So many people absolutely do find great jobs that they don't ever even apply for because they're afraid they aren't qualified enough or afraid of rejection.

Studies have shown that women have to feel they meet at least 90% of the qualifications before they apply for a job while men will apply even if they only meet 50% of the quals.

LADIES, we gotta put ourselves out there! Worst case scenario. all you lose is the 5-10 mins it took to apply. SO GO APPLY!

I'm chatting with you from my home office today about positions that are not 100% remote.

They do exist and A LOT of people don't even bother looking at them because they are so focused on finding a fully remote job.

I want to encourage you to apply for these jobs even if they aren't fully remote.

Why?

Well, for one you need to get into the habit of applying for jobs and going through the hiring process. I believe in achievement motivation. Once you start applying for the jobs you "kinda" want, it will be that much easier to apply for the ones you really want.

Secondly, if you get the job, you will now have remote experience and that will make you more appealing to the companies that are hiring a 100% remote workforce.

But the biggest reason I want you to go for it is because partial remote is more remote than you are now!

So get out there and apply.
